The Frank Field Education Trust (FFET) proudly hosted its first-ever Chess Competition, bringing together students from schools across the Trust, including Birches Head Academy, Ellesmere Port C of E College and Handforth Grange Primary School.
The competition also welcomed external challengers, with students from Ormiston Horizon Academy, Excel Academy, Clayton Hall Academy Our lady and St Werburgs Primary School and Heron Cross Primary School also joining in the tournament.
Held at Birches Head Academy on 2 May 2025, the competition saw teams face off in multiple rounds of fast-paced matches, each one testing their problem-solving skills, patience, and resilience. The event concluded with an exciting final that crowned the 2025 Chess Champions.
“This competition is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop critical thinking and resilience, while engaging in friendly competition” said Katie Dixon, Director of Education at FFET, adding “The competition was close and we are incredibly proud of all the pupils who took part in this event!”
The Clayton High School (Boys Team) claimed first place, followed by BHA’s ‘The A-Team’ in second, and Ormiston Academy in third. Heron Cross Primary was the highest-ranking primary school. The winning team demonstrated exceptional strategic skill and secured the top spot in the competition. All participants were recognised for their commitment with certificates and the top-performing teams were awarded for their outstanding achievements.
