Welcome to our Year 9 Options Information page. This next phase of your compulsory school education is an important part of your education pathway and hopefully the most exciting part of your learning journey so far.
The next two years will bring challenge and change, as well as increased responsibility and a wealth of opportunities as young adulthood beckons and you progress to the next step towards achieving your future aspirations. Expectations are high for our Key Stage 4 students at the Ellesmere Port Church of England College. To achieve your potential here at the College, you will need to show courage and integrity, with a desire to be the best you can possibly be.
Some subjects are compulsory and some subjects you will be able to choose. The details on this website and in the Curriculum Guide will help with those decisions. We hope you are looking forward to joining Key Stage 4 and look forward to continue working with you as you take these next steps.

Your Options Form should be submitted to your Form Tutor by Monday 23rd March 2026.
During Key Stage 4, all students will have at least one careers meeting with Mploy, our independent careers guidance service. These sessions are designed to help you make informed decisions about your future. In your meeting, you can expect to:

English Language & Literature – Career: Journalist
Journalists investigate, research and write stories for newspapers, magazines, television, radio and online media. This career involves interviewing people, analysing information and presenting it clearly for different audiences. Skills developed in English, such as evaluating texts, structuring arguments and adapting writing styles, are essential for journalistic work.
As journalists progress, they can specialise in areas including sport, politics, entertainment or investigative reporting. Many move into editing, broadcasting, digital content creation or media production. Strong literacy and communication skills make journalism a versatile and influential career choice.
Mathematics – Career: Data Analyst
Data analysts work with numbers and patterns to help organisations make informed decisions. They collect data, use spreadsheets or digital tools to interpret information and look for trends that answer important questions. GCSE Maths provides the logical reasoning, numeracy and problem‑solving skills that support this type of work.
Data analysts are needed in finance, sport, healthcare, technology, retail and almost every other industry. With experience, they may move into data science, business analysis or statistical modelling. The ability to understand and explain numerical information makes this a valuable and growing career field.
Combined Science – Career: Laboratory Technician
Laboratory technicians support experiments and scientific investigations carried out in schools, hospitals, research labs and industry. They help prepare materials, use specialised equipment and record or analyse results. GCSE Science develops knowledge of Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as practical and investigative skills that this career relies on.

Religious Studies – Career: Social Worker

Core PE – Career: Fitness Instructor
Fitness instructors lead exercise sessions, support people in improving their health and help clients build strength and confidence. Core PE encourages teamwork, leadership and an understanding of physical activity, all of which support this role.
With further training, fitness instructors can move into personal training, sports coaching or gym management. Many specialise in areas such as strength training, group exercise or community health programmes. The interest in wellbeing continues to grow, making this an active and rewarding career path.
Art & Design – Career: Graphic Designer
Graphic designers create visual content for advertising, branding, digital media and print. They combine creativity with technical skills to communicate ideas using images, layout and design software. GCSE Art helps students develop originality, creativity and confidence in producing visual work.
Graphic designers may work in marketing, publishing, web design or creative agencies. Some choose to freelance or specialise in animation, illustration or digital design. This is an exciting career for students who enjoy visual communication and creative problem‑solving.
Design Technology – Career: Product Designer
Product designers develop everyday objects ranging from furniture to electronics. They explore how things look, feel and function by creating prototypes and refining ideas. Design Technology supports this career by developing practical skills, design thinking and an understanding of materials and manufacturing.
Product designers often work closely with engineers, manufacturers and clients. They may specialise in sustainable design, user‑focused design or digital modelling. This career suits students who enjoy innovation, creativity and making practical solutions.
Drama – Career: Stage Manager
Stage managers organise the backstage elements of a theatre production, making sure rehearsals and performances run smoothly. They coordinate props, set pieces, schedules and communication between actors, directors and technical teams. Drama helps develop teamwork, confidence and organisation, all essential for stage management.
Stage managers can progress into roles in theatre production, live events, TV, touring shows and technical direction. This career is ideal for students who enjoy performance but prefer working behind the scenes to bring a production to life.
Enterprise (BTEC) – Career: Entrepreneur

Geography – Career: Urban Planner
Urban planners help shape towns and cities by designing housing, transport networks, public spaces and sustainable solutions. Geography develops an understanding of physical and human processes, as well as skills in data interpretation and fieldwork, all of which underpin planning work.
Urban planners often work with architects, engineers and environmental specialists. They play a key role in tackling issues such as climate change, regeneration and community development. This career suits students interested in how places work and how they can be improved.
Health & Social Care – Career: Nurse
Nurses provide care and support to patients in hospitals, clinics and community settings. They monitor health, assist with treatment and work closely with medical teams. Health & Social Care introduces human development, communication skills and care values that form the foundation of nursing.
Nurses can specialise in areas such as mental health, paediatrics, emergency care or midwifery. It is a career with strong progression opportunities and the chance to make a real difference to people’s lives every day.
History – Career: Archivist
Archivists preserve and organise important historical documents, photographs and artefacts. They help make historical records accessible to researchers and the public. GCSE History develops research, source analysis and evaluation skills that align closely with this career.
Archivists can work in museums, libraries, universities and heritage organisations. This path may also lead to roles in conservation, museum curation or academic research. It is a great fit for students who enjoy investigating the past and presenting information clearly.
Hospitality & Catering – Career: Chef
Chefs prepare and cook meals in restaurants, hotels and catering environments. They work creatively with ingredients while maintaining high standards of hygiene and organisation. The Hospitality & Catering course introduces food safety, nutrition and practical cooking skills that support this career.

Music – Career: Sound Engineer
Sound engineers work in recording studios, live events, radio, film and TV, using specialist equipment to record, mix and edit audio. GCSE Music supports this through listening skills, an understanding of musical elements and experience with technology.
This career offers a pathway into music production, broadcasting, theatre sound, gaming audio design and film post‑production. Sound engineers combine creativity with technical skill to bring performances and recordings to life.
Spanish – Career: Translator
Translators convert written material from one language into another while keeping meaning and tone accurate. GCSE Spanish develops vocabulary, grammar and communication skills that form a strong foundation for this work.

BTEC Sport – Career: Sports Coach
Sports coaches plan and deliver training sessions to help athletes improve their skills and performance. The BTEC Sport course develops understanding of fitness, training methods and sport psychology, all relevant to coaching.

Triple Science – Career: Biomedical Scientist
Biomedical scientists work in medical and research laboratories analysing samples to diagnose illness and support treatment. Triple Science builds deeper scientific understanding and practical skills that prepare students for this pathway.
